This article includes a description of severe wear and early failure of a mineral-granule-surfaced roll roofing installation over an older metal roof. We also provide.
Roll roofing is inexpensive and easy to apply, although it must be replaced sooner than most other materials and usually has a class C fire rating (A is the most fire resistant). It is particularly suitable where cost is more important than appearance or for low-slope roofing that you want to install yourself. It can be used for roof slopes down to 2 in 12 with the exposed-nail method, or down to 1 in 12 with the concealed-nail method. Each method can be used with full-width mineral surface (single coverage) rolls or selvage-edge (double coverage) rolls. Double coverage roofs last much longer, up to fifteen years or more.

As a rule, because roll roofing can crack in cold weather, it should not be applied when the temperature is below 45°F. If the job must be done anyway, store the rolls in a warm place prior to application, or unroll and cut them into strips no longer than 18 feet and let them lie on the roof until they are flat. If possible, install roll roofing over a smooth plywood deck, either perpendicular or parallel to the slope. The roofing should overhang the eaves by ½ inch, except where you install drip-edge flashing on top of the roofing along the rake edge. An underlayment of felt roofing is optional. You will need 1/10 gallon of lap (not mastic) cement for every roll, and 2 pounds of roofing nails for every square.
(In roofing, one square equals 100 square feet). Use 1 inch nails for new roofing; they are long enough to penetrate the sheathing. Use 1 ¼ nails for. Enlist the help of one or two helpers to handle the long strips.
Valleys will be open, so them before-hand with metal or two layers of roll roofing, the first an 18-inch-wide strip and the second 36 inches wide. Install the first strip upside down. Nail along one edge first, spacing nails ¾ inch in from the edge and 6 inches apart. Then nail the opposite edge. Make sure to overlap all end joints at least 6 inches. Installation Using The Concealed-Nail Method The key to a tight roof is applying the roofing when it is warm enough for full expansion and staggering the nails along the top edge of each course so that the 4-inch band that gets covered with lap cement is sure to lie perfectly flat. Install valley flashing if necessary.
Cut 9-inch-wide strips and place them along the rakes, nailing ¾ inch from the edge every 4 inches. Snap a chalk line, position the first sheet, and nail it across the top every 4 inches. For maximum stability, stagger the nails along the top edge.

Set the bottom and side edges with lap cement. Repeat these procedures to apply the remaining courses, overlapping each one 4 inches. Using The Exposed-Nail Method Install each course of roofing like the concealed-nail method.
As you work your way up the roof, take measurements between each chalk line and at various points along the eave and ridge to make sure the courses will come out evenly. Nails along the bottom of each course should be 2 or 3 inches apart, according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Keep nails aligned neatly. Snap a chalk line 35 ½ inches above the eave. Position the first sheet, tack the top every 2 feet, and nail the rake and eave edges every 3 inches, keeping the nails ¾ inch away from the edge. Snap a chalk line on the top of the first piece 2 inches below the edge.
Tack the upper edge of the second strip. Then spread a 2 inch band of roofing cement under the bottom edge. Nail every two or three inches. Install the rest of the sheets in the same way, staggering end joints. Apply ridge and hip caps and metal drip edging along the rakes.
Hips And Ridges For hips and ridges, cut the roofing so that it meets but does not overlap the joint. Snap a chalk line on each side 5 ½ inches away from the center of the hip or ridge. For exposed-nail applications, spread a 2-inch wide strip of roofing cement from each line back toward the center; then cut a 12-inch strip of roofing the length of the hip or ridge, gently bend it, and nail it in place. For long hips that require more than one strip, work from the bottom up, lapping end joints 6 inches or more.
When using the concealed-nail method, apply lap cement to the entire area between the chalk lines and then embed the 12-inch strip in it. Only use nails in the top two corners. Vent Flashing Cut a hole in the roof just large enough for the and lay the strip into place. Then install metal vent flashing over the pipe, coating the roofing with mastic first so that the metal flange is embedded in it completely. Nail around the flange every two inches.
For maximum strength, install blocking under the roof in places where the nails will penetrate the sheathing. Double Coverage Selvage-edge roofing is installed the same way as full-width roll roofing, except that each course overlaps the previous course 19 inches instead of 4.
This technique will also work with full-width rolls if you cannot find selvage-edge roll roofing in your local store. Related Articles.
Roll roofing is made from the same asphalt composition material as shingles, and it's easier to install. There are three systems, including glue-down, torch-down and peel-and-stick. Peel-and-stick systems tend to be prohibitively expensive, though, and installing a torch-down system requires expertise, so many people opt for the glue-down method. You can install roll roofing directly over a single layer of existing roof covering, but if there are already two coverings, you must remove both.
Besides creating extra weight for your house to support, installing rolled roofing over an existing roof reduces the lifetime of the new roof, and existing leaks may reappear.
